Ever since the development of the Pong arcade game, video games have evolved and cemented themselves in society. Everyday, adolescents and adults alike are exposed to games from their laptops, X-box, PS3’s, and more. Yet it seems that recently, Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) games, such as Defense of the Ancients 2 (DOTA 2), League of Legends (LOL), and Heroes of Newerth (HoN), are dominating the video game industry and attracting a multitude of ISM students.

unnamed-2What is so attractive about these games? Well, gamers are able to create an infinite number of situations in the same map, maximizing the replayability of the game. Plus, MMO games support multiple players, requiring both focus from an individual and cooperation from a team, increasing the strategy and mental stimulation needed from players. A typical game scenario consists of two teams in opposite corners of a map, talking control of areas until the Ancient (DOTA 2), World Tree/Sacrifical Shrine (HoN), or Nexus (LOL) is destroyed, with several carefully orchestrated battles leading to ultimate victory.

unnamedAlmost all MMO games have features enabling people to play with other random players from the same skill pool, enhancing the competitive aspect of MMO games. LOL enthusiast Jack comments, “It is enjoyable because you see yourself progress as a gamer. Since there’s a ranking feature, you feel satisfied when you see yourself rise above others.”

It is no wonder that ISM students find themselves hooked on MMO games—they reflect the diversity of our school as more and more students play with each other, making the experience more enjoyable. The increasing popularity of MMO games has been seen throughout not only the ISM community but also the international community, and with the rapid development of technology allowing gamers from all around the world to connect with each other, video gamesunnamedare now so popular that they are considered sports. More than that, though, we can all learn from MMO games, as they teach us to collaborate with each other and to focus on nurturing our ambitious drives, which ultimately is what matters most.
