Top 14 Songs of 2014

Compiled by: Maxine Alindogan

Music is a universal language that truly adds color to our lives; it’s a source of expression, collaboration, jubilation, and, most importantly, relaxation.  Here are the 14 songs we think brightened up 2014:

1. “Summer” by Calvin Harris

With school just beginning and summer still fresh in our minds, I’m sure we all couldn’t help but jam to Calvin Harris’s song and reminisce about the relaxing and worry-free days of summer.

2.“Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars

Although this song didn’t come out until November, this upbeat song would have definitely made it to our playlist during the first few days of school. Listening to it is the perfect way to get you excited and pumped up for what lies ahead.

3.“Happy” by Pharrell Williams

As the days of school progress and the workload slowly begins to pile up, we couldn’t help but notice how often Pharrell’s “Happy” was used in the videos played during assembly.  Nonetheless, we’re sure it managed to put a smile on all our faces. 🙂

4. “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith

Feeling a little blue? Well it’s Sam you should turn to. We thought we had a taste of Sam Smith and his soulful voice from his featurette in “Latch” by Disclosure, but turns out we were wrong.  Our ears were screaming with elation when we heard his new album In the Lonely Hour, especially “Stay with Me.”

5. “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor

For girls, it’s always a nice reminder when a celebrity tells us that image isn’t everything.  Meghan Trainor certainly emphasizes that in her catchy single, “All About That Bass.”

6.“Rather Be” by Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne

If you’re the type of person who enjoys a fusion of electronic, classical and hip-hop then this grammy-nominated song is definitely for your playlist.  Not only is a feel-good song but it’s hard to get sick of.

7. “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

Another song that we can’t seem to get enough of is Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” If you thought you loved the song, wait until you see the music video; it hits you in all the right places 🙂

8. “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is everyone’s best friend.  Her album 1989 truly took a turn in the opposite direction from her previous music but we definitely think it’s for the better.  Along with her new sound comes new advice and “Shake It Off” is a great reminder that we shouldn’t take life and the people around us too seriously.

9. “Bang Bang” by Jessie J. feat. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj

Do you enjoy songs with strong female voices? Well, wait until you get a taste of this song. Jessie J., Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj collaborate with each other in their catchy single called “Bang Bang.”

The year wouldn’t be complete without Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go.”  This song walked it’s way into everyone’s hearts (so much that it was even translated into other languages, catch the filipino one here:!
