In many movies that exist around the world, such as the Matrix and the Terminator, computers have become the dominant force, overpowering and outsmarting humans. While this has only happened in fictional movies, many of the tech gurus of today’s society have voiced their concerns.

The chairman of Tesla motors, Elon Musk, is one of the many tech gurus that has gone as far as to sign a document that ensures all of the AIs he develops in the future, no matter how advanced, will be kept within control of human beings.

Similarly, Bill Gates, the co-founder and CEO of Microsoft, has started to voice his concern about artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential threat to mankind. However, Gates believes that, for as long as the intelligences remain under human control, they pose no threat. He states, “first the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent.” They will not pose any threat, as they have no free will and thus no reason to attack humankind.

Now that there are people who believe that AI’s in the future will become a potential threat and people who dismiss this altogether, how much of this belief is based on fact? Currently, one of the most accessible examples of an AI is Siri, Apple’s voice assistant.  As of now, Siri may not seem too technologically advanced, as it lacks creative thinking and responds only in accordance to pre-programmed instructions. In the future, however, AI will become stronger and more intelligent, until it eventually reaches the point in which it has the ability to develop itself and learn on its own. Think about the possible threats if AI is able to reach this point– an AI can access all of the data on one’s phone and computer with impunity, possessing the ability to hack all of one’s devices easily.

Artificial intelligence may help mankind in countless ways by making lives easier through its ability to efficiently perform traditionally human jobs. However, if AIs become technologically advanced to the state of having too much power, they could potentially pose a threat to humankind. Is risking everything for technological advancement worth it? We can only find out once we see the technology itself.
