Unless you have been living under a rock, you may have noticed that the music scene has been busier than ever. Arguably the biggest boy band battle in history occurred four days ago, on November 13, when One Direction and Justin Bieber both released their highly anticipated albums on the same day. While these two artists may have rocked the music world with their rivalry, other artists have also blessed the world with new songs. Ariana Grande’s catchy hit single Focus sits comfortably at number 7 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart, while Adele’s haunting ballad Hello reigns at number 1, closely followed by Drake’s emotion-packed Hotline Bling. Although there is no singular reason for the rise of the sudden explosion of new music, certain factors may have caused this trend.
The American Music Awards, one of the world’s most prestigious music awards shows, is scheduled to air on November 22. On this night, artists battle it out to gain the most recognition and praise for their work. Naturally, it wouldn’t hurt to still be relevant during the ceremony, and there would be no better way to do this than by releasing their songs as close as possible to the event.
One other reason for the sudden flood of music could be new film releases. The most recent James Bond film, Spectre, features Sam Smith’s Writing’s on the Wall, contributing to the song’s success. Another song which at least partially owes its success to a movie is See You Again by Wiz Khalifa, which was featured in Furious 7 and dominated the charts earlier this year.
While these two factors may well have been the reasons for the rise of new releases, certain ISM music fans have other theories. When asked about his opinion on One Direction’s latest songs, junior Won Ho S. had one word to describe the album: gold. Although Won Ho is not a “Directioner,” or One Direction fan, he believes that more people are listening to their music because “there is more emphasis on the instrumentals.” Nikki H., a sophomore and avid Directioner, agrees that “they’re continually improving and maturing their sound.” When asked about the rivalry with Justin Bieber, she replied, “if people think the boys are trying to compete with Justin, that really isn’t the case… what is truly important to them is how their fans appreciate the music.” Regardless of the reason for these new songs, the outcome has been the same – more great music for everyone to enjoy.
