The Oscars, one of the most prestigious film events in the entire world, is happening on February 28th. Every year, eight astounding films are honored with an Oscar Best Picture nomination, and the following are this year’s lucky nominees:
1. The Big Short
This biographical comedy-drama gives insight into the US financial crisis in 2008. With a star cast of Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt, The Big Short is sure to entertain you, while also enlightening you on the internal corruption within the stock market.
2. Bridge of Spies
Set during the Cold War, a top attorney (Tom Hanks) must help negotiate the release of the American U2 pilot who was shot down above Russia. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this chilling thriller is great for people who love history and/or great directing.
In search of the American Dream, Eilis Lacey, a young Irish immigrant, makes her way to 1950s Brooklyn, where she must overcome struggles of her past in order to find a new life. The film is subtly beautiful, bringing viewers an air of nostalgia.
4. Mad Max: Fury Road
With a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Mad Max has garnered a lot of hype. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world and is filled with fast-paced action that brings the beloved franchise back to life.
5. The Martian
A film as informative as it is funny, The Martian tells the story of astronaut Mark Watney as he attempts to survive alone on Mars, accidentally left behind by his crew. He ingeniously uses all of his resources and logic to engineer ways to thrive on the lonely planet as NASA attempts to rescue him.
6. The Revenant
The Revenant, set in the American wilderness of the 1800s, tells the story of one man’s quest for survival against all odds. Watching this film is a completely immersive experience, with astounding shots by Alejandro González Iñárritu that will send chills up your spine.
A chilling film which tells the story of a young boy and his mom who are held captive inside a small shed. Together, they must find a means of escape and then learn to navigate an entirely new world.
Based on a true story, this very serious film tells the story of a newspaper fighting to uncover the truth behind the abuse allegations within the church.
