With the start of the school year comes the start of first season athletics, and the much-anticipated Friday Night Lights event. On Friday, August 19, the Bearcat soccer and volleyball teams battled it out against Faith Academy, hungry for a victory for their first games of the season. The crowd was excited and full of anticipation, expressing it loud and clear with enthusiastic cheering for ISM teams.
On the first game on the soccer field, varsity girls player, Sienna H. (12), began the girls’ scoring streak with a successful penalty kick. Not long after was a second goal by rookie varsity player, sophomore Aspen N., who rocketed a solid ball to the back of the net to double the lead. Finally, superstar senior, Trinity M., finished a beautifully set up assist by Sienna H. to seal the 3-0 victory. The varsity girls dominated both halves with outstanding performances from all players, particularly rookies including midfielder, Ena. H. (9), defender, Nancy K. (9), and goalkeeper, Grace S. A new and secret formation is what Coaches Cooling and Richo believe “[held] the secret to the Bearcats’ victory.”
The girls junior varsity soccer team also shared the spotlight by sealing an extraordinary win over Faith with a final score of 9-0. Coach Roseleip commended the team’s solid play, commenting that it was “very positive and exciting to know we had versatility and depth in our attack. With the girls’ dedication, [she] can certainly see a championship league game in the future!”
Due to the unfortunate onset of lightning, the game for the boys varsity soccer had to be cancelled at half time, though they were able to clinch a small sense of victory in line with the successful performances of other teams that afternoon, with a score of 1-0 against Faith when the game was called off.
Inside the gym, the boys and the girls volleyball teams fought their way to wins for their first games of the season. Both the boys varsity and JV teams finished with wins. Coach Berg said, “Though the team started out slow, they were able to fine tune their mistakes and turn them into opportunities for some big points.” Coach Berg added that the team may be new but that won’t hold them back as long as they keep working as a unit.
Finally, the varsity girls volleyball also shared success, winning 12 points in a row from senior Juliana A., and her spectacular serving. New teammember Audrey (10), shared her experience on her first game, saying, “I was really nervous, but it was just exciting to really feel the start of the new season.” Though there are always things we could work on, we still gave it our all and showed our best. The JV volleyball girls unfortunately couldn’t clinch the win, but they were luckily able to share the glory of the other team’s successes, and continue to look ahead to the many more games, and hopefully successes, to come.
