What could be better than spending your evening with an introverted wizard who looks exactly like Eddie Redmayne? Harry Potter fan or not, you will undoubtedly enjoy a journey with the innumerable magical creatures in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a film written by J.K. Rowling herself and directed by the famous David Yates.

Zaineen Karim, senior at ISM and a longstanding fan of Harry Potter, recently watched this movie. She has no doubt that it surpassed all expectations. She shares that, “It seemed to be largely catered towards the Harry Potter fanbase as the film induced a lot of nostalgia and was very authentic with its links to the original series.” However, it wasn’t simply a continuation of Harry Potter. She explains, “A lot of the themes explored were darker and more mature than what was in the books and that added an interesting new dimension to the story.” She seems more excited than ever to watch this new series unfold, especially because these movies seem to be leading up to the legendary duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Bella Staal, another senior at ISM and fellow Harry Potter enthusiast, was equally impressed by this unique piece of work. According to her, the film will be most enjoyed by fans who go in without expecting it to be exactly like Harry Potter. She reveals, “It had references to the original series in all the places where there needed to be. It was a great story, the special effects were insane, Eddie Redmayne is amazing, and honestly, it did manage to have that kind of Harry Potter feel. You can tell that it’s written by Rowling. Sometimes they played the HP music and I kind of wanted to die, especially at the beginning when the Warner Bros thing came up, so yeah it was pretty lit. I’ll probably watch it again!”

Coming from huge Harry Potter fans, it seems the movie has been successful with both effects and its thematic approach. If Harry Potter was never your cup of tea, the little twist to the tale might grant you a fresh outlook. If you are someone looking for something a little darker than the much-loved Harry Potter series, you will likely enjoy this adventure filled movie. It’s in theaters now, so make sure to go check it out!
