SpaceX: Revolutionizing Space Suits

Article by Liam Ramos

SpaceX. This company has made many headlines as an organization that is making groundbreaking innovations in their quest for space exploration. One of their newest technologies is the release of their official space suit, which their founder and CEO Elon Musk revealed on August 23, 2017 via Instagram.

These sleek white outfits will be donned by the astronauts meant to take part in the plan to transport a crewed version of the Dragon Capsule to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2018. The Dragon was the first commercial ship to deliver cargo to the ISS and return the cargo to Earth in 2012. SpaceX wants to regularly transport NASA astronauts to the ISS using these commercial capsules.

The suits are pressure suits, which means they are to be worn by astronauts in transit, not for spacewalks. This is a safety precaution in case the Dragon Capsule depressurizes. It has already been tested to work on Earth, and can withstand even double the pressure. Elon Musk states, “[It] was very hard to balance aesthetics and function. Easy to do separately.” But this suit, with its black and white accents creating a minimalistic design, is the culmination of their work in order to create an elegant, yet functional, space suit.

SpaceX’s last major innovation was the launching and landing of their used Falcon 9 rocket. With their continued success in developing technology, they plan to pursue their dreams of reaching Mars by 2024. The famous physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson says, “The delusion is thinking that SpaceX is going to lead the space frontier.” But Elon Musk and SpaceX seem to have other plans.
