Movies to look out for in 2018

Article by Sally Jang

As 2017 is nearing an end, many are anticipating new, exciting events in 2018, including the theatrical release of new movies. Many different films are set to premiere i next year, leaving the public excited for what the box office has in store for us all.

Below is a short list of the Upcoming 2018 Movies to look forward to from IMDB:

1. The Incredibles 2 – 14 June 2018

2. Chaos Walking – 01 March 2019

3. Aquaman – 21 December 2018

4. Ant-Man and the Wasp – 06 July 2018

5. Avengers: Infinity War – 04 May 2018

6. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – 22 June 2018

7. Pacific Rim Uprising – March 23, 2018

8. Maze Runner: The Death Cure – January 26, 2018

9. Ready Player One – March 30, 2018

10 Black Panther – February 16, 2018

Of special note are Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Black Panther, whose release dates fall in the Dump Months–dates which would typically include films that would have been released at other times of year had they performed better at test screenings, films with less prominent stars, movies that cannot be easily marketed, genre films (particularly horror), and films intended for a teenage audience.

However, it seems like Black Panther can capitalize on the fact that its show date is close to Valentine’s, and both men and women fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise can go on their romantic dates to watch this film. As for the The Death Cure, the conclusion to The Maze Runner trilogy, producers don’t look too worried about the third film falling to the Dump Month trap, especially since The Maze Runner (2014) and The Scorch Trials (2015) were both acclaimed box office hits, setting high standards for this trilogy. Others in the list are mostly slated for a mid-year release, just in time for kids and teenagers to go see during summer vacation.

Students in ISM have mixed opinions regarding the top ten list, although all of them are very excited for the long-awaited sequel to The Incredibles, which hits theaters late Spring next year. Minnie S, a junior, says that while she is familiar with all of the movies listed above, she is most interested about The Incredibles 2 and Mission Impossible 6 (which, while not listed in the top 10, is ranked 29th). She also mentioned that  she would love to see Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Mary Poppins Returns, which will be released in July and Christmas next year, respectively.

Similarly, another junior, Gabby F, is also thrilled about the soon-to-be-shown Incredibles 2. She also mentions that she is a big fan of Marvel, so she is very excited to see Black Panther in February 2018. A third student, Kirtana D, said that she would like to see Mission Impossible 6, because she considers herself a fan, having seen and liked its previous instalments. Overall, 2018 seems to be a fun year, with many exciting, new movies to look forward to!
