With the start of 2018 and the recent conclusion of last season’s Metro Manila Film Festival comes a slew of new movies waiting for the public at the box office. Many titles being premiered this month are highly anticipated films, ranging from Jumanji 2 to Pitch Perfect 3. A survey taken from the ISM student community revealed that while answers varied, a majority of the younger student population were looking forward to the musical/comedy, Pitch Perfect 3, while a high percent of the female students from middle and high school were more thrilled about the series ender to the horror flick Insidious, aptly titled Insidious: The Last Key.
1. Maze Runner: The Death Cure
The Death Cure is the third and final installment of the Maze Runner series, with a nationwide release date of January 24. Thomas, the protagonist, is on his final mission to save his friends and himself. They must break into the legendary last city, a WCKD- controlled labyrinth, that might turn out to be the deadliest maze. A chance to confront the Gladers is possible if Thomas and his team survive, but the question is, will they? Kirtana D(11) says that she is very excited for the movie, since she liked the book series, and enjoyed the two previous movie adaptations. Additionally, since she prefers the fantasy, science fiction, and action genre of movies, she is eager to see this movie.
2. Insidious: The Last Key
Also the last film in the Insidious franchise, Insidious: The Last Key follows parapsychologist Elise Rainier as she receives a disturbing phone call about her house being haunted. She hires two of her investigation team partners to confront the demons. Sally L, a junior, is very interested in watching this movie, which appeared in the cinemas starting January 17, as she has “a thing” for watching horror movies. She cited enjoying films like “Annabelle” and “The Conjuring”, which fall under the same genre.
3. Pitch Perfect 3
The movie that the majority of the people in ISM are excited about, Pitch Perfect 3, starts its screening on January 8. Most of the ISM student community watched the first and second movies, gave them high ratings, and recommended them to others. One of these people was Patharin S, a junior who mentioned that the a cappella songs are always pleasant to hear, which is why she is enthusiastic about the last movie. Pitch Perfect 3 has The Bellas, an all-women, now post-collegiate, a cappella singing team, coming together once again to make music through an overseas USO tour.
4. Madtown (5 January 2018)
Originally premiered in the 2016 Cleveland International Film Festival (where it won an award), and accepted as an official selection for the Newport Beach Film Festival, Charles Moore’s independent drama thriller is set to be shown in theaters January 3. The movie stars Milo Ventimiglia as a troubled, young man named Denny Briggs, who is conflicted about the release of his sister from prison after a 20-year incarceration, on grounds of killing their parents. Briggs is fighting to protect and rebuild his life while trying to deal with his estranged sister.
These are some of the movies that the ISM community should definitely consider watching especially on the weekends with their friends.
