Why are you applying for council?

Among all of the councils I have been involved in, I can easily say that my passion for leadership is truly exemplified through ISSBA. As this year’s secretary, my organization and leadership skills improved incredibly and looking from an authoritative perspective helped me become more aware of everything that happens in the school community. Regardless of the demanding workload this council required, I loved being part of ISSBA this year because it gave me a chance to learn about my school environment and form relationships with new people. I have demonstrated my abilities to serve the ISM community in a positive manner by helping plan important events and activities for our student body – such as assemblies and Battle of the Bearcats. Being on the ISSBA council is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience and is something I’d love to have the opportunity of being part of again.

Describe your leadership style.

Having a good group dynamic is essential, thus, I have become flexible and compatible with different types of leadership styles. As a leader, I focus on getting things done in a timely manner by being assertive, but at the same time, respectful and understanding. To succeed, communication is necessary both inside and outside of a council. Thus, I have become a good communicator, listener, and will always lend an open ear to new ideas and suggestions. I know how important it is to represent your council’s decisions and to step up when necessary. A council always works hard to achieve the best for the group of people they are representing. I believe that, if elected next year, I will be able to ensure ISSBA will represent the ISM student body to the best of my abilities by making decisions that benefit the entire high school.

Why should students vote for you?

I can proudly say that being in ISSBA has been one of my favorite experiences in high school and has become very special to me. I’m highly driven and motivated to do my tasks right. That said, I have been committed and hard working in the council this year. As the only returning member, I know what needs to be done and how it can be done, thus I would be able to lead next year’s council. Although the work can be strenuous, the results are beyond rewarding. If elected again, I will ensure that the decisions the ISSBA makes represents the majority of our high school population by utilizing all I have learned from a year’s worth of knowledge and experience. Even though nicknamed “ISSBAby” by the current council, as I was the only non-senior, I can confidently say that I’ve grown up from being the baby of the council and am ready to commit and take on one of the two biggest jobs. ISSBA is truly a council of its own and I have grown not only as a council member, but have grown more confident as a leader and a person. I would be beyond grateful if I were elected into this council again for my final year at ISM. 🙂

Grade 11

Why are you applying for council?

I am applying for the ISSBA Council because I believe that high school will not truly be complete for me unless I am able to serve ISM in the most profound way possible— and that is through serving as a member of the high school body’s ISSBA Council.
As a Filipino scholar, ISM has opened to me to so many doors of opportunity and growth. I have been motivated by my teachers, supported by my friends, inspired by my peers— and I owe all this to a rather inconspicuous and modest advertisement I stumbled upon inadvertently on the internet. Today, this school has built in me the characters of integrity, service, and merit I shall embody and uphold throughout my entire life. And ISSBA is my humble way of giving back.

Describe your leadership style.

If there is one trait I have that describes my leadership style, it is that I am one who has direction. This characteristic, I know, is very questionable with regard to the capacity of a leader to be open minded—and well, rest assured, I am undoubtedly someone who is assertive, forthright, and firm—and although some might regard these to be traits of a stubborn leader, I can say, in all honesty, that I am anything but rigid.

I believe that what distinguishes my leadership style from that of others is that I am able to find the balance between being a firm leader and being an open-minded one, ensuring that progress and meaningful reinvention take precedence. I am one who is quick to admit my mistakes and quick to praise those who are right because I see no reason to be selfish when it concerns the betterment of something bigger than myself, as being selfish does no one any service—and leadership is nothing after all, but an opportunity to serve.

Why should students vote for you?

Above all else, I am an ISM high school student faced with the same problems and challenges as everyone else. If elected, I can’t promise less homework, better canteen food, or more lenient teachers for I don’t consider myself to be in the business of making false promises—and more importantly, promises that I can not follow through. But I believe that the student body should vote for me anyway because if I could choose the kind of leader that I would want to be, I’d choose to be an honest one.

I can not stress enough the importance of having an honest leader—one who knows his limits, one who is clear about what he can and can not do in a position of privilege, one who others know to be acting on behalf of their best interests, and most importantly, one is who honest to himself. As I said, I am an ordinary ISM high school student faced with the same high school problems facing everyone else. And to be perfectly—well—honest, I’d want to look up to someone who was honest enough to know that he’s just like me.

Why are you applying for council?

This school and its community have been defining figures in my life for the past 6 years that I’ve been at this school and I am endlessly grateful for all the wonderful and transformative things that the ISM community has enabled me to experience thanks to effective and creative leadership . Thus my desire to run for ISSBA stems from a deep sense of gratitude and need to reciprocate the positive impact ISM and its members have had on me by in turn becoming a defining figure within this community. I also believe that I am fully capable – not just of fulfilling this capacity but going above and beyond. Having already served in presidential positions for various school organizations, having gained the necessary wisdom and having cherished the experience, I know that I can represent the student body, hear what they have to say and work relentlessly to honour their desires.

Describe your leadership style.

I’m a visionary and I believe that the clarity and depth of my goals and vision for a given organization are the defining features of my leadership style. I am also a great believer in synergy, that idea that 1 + 1 = 3. I know that some of the greatest accomplishments and successes come out of collaboration and shared thinking and I thus greatly value team work.
My passion and love for those I serve also enable me to work relentlessly and put 110% into everything I do. I believe in honouring those I serve and so I haven’t done my job until I’ve helped implement long and lasting change. In that way my leadership style is also transformative.

Why should students vote for you?

My strong sense of responsibility to fellow members of the community and unconditional desire to help those around me make me a perfect candidate for the job. My passion and desire to help and make the school a better place for everyone know no bounds and it is for that reason I know that I can do well and that the community will benefit from my leadership.
I also base my life and what I do around principles such that these values and principles take precedence over any possibly self-serving desires. Thus this ensures that I’m a fair and just leader without any hidden agenda. You can trust that I am capable too because of my leadership experience especially in presidential positions and I hope my impact speaks to my ability. I have also become an effective and efficient communicator meaning that students can place faith in me to be the bridge they desire between the student body and the school administration. Rest assured that I am organized, persevering and resilient even in the face of adversity and that my obligations and duties to the student body will be my top priority.

Grade 11

Why are you applying for council?

I want to be ISSBA President or Vice President because I want to serve the school that has molded me into the diligent student that I am today. ISSBA serves as the voice of the students and connects the student body with the school’s administration, and I feel that I am the most qualified for the job. I am industrious, hardworking, and very organized. I believe that I have an amiable, charismatic, and respectable personality, both in person and on stage. I also genuinely want to help next year’s batches of students and make next year one of the best in ISM.

Describe your leadership style.

I am very organized with my materials and schoolwork, and I always keep an eye on my email/other communication mediums 24-7 so I will always be acutely aware of who I am communicating with for whatever reason. I believe that a leader can manage better if things are organized and if there is a lot of communication within a group. I also try to hold myself to the highest standard of integrity and conduct, two characteristics a leader and a member of ISSBA should have. Furthermore, as part of Kawayan, I have plenty of leadership experience as well, and can easily contribute, elaborate, and build off others in discussions with the rest of the members. Having a part in Kawayan has also helped me take and apply criticism more effectively to the point where I sometimes actively ask for critiques, opinions, or suggestions for self-improvement.

Why should students vote for you?

People who know me can vouch that I am a very driven and extremely reliable person. My batch mates know that I am a hard worker and will work tirelessly for them to make sure all the assigned tasks are finished and goals accomplished at the highest quality I can produce. They can also expect an honest person, one who does not cheat and cut corners. Being Junior Council treasurer and Kawayan Managing Editor this year, I think I have done a great job as a leader and have not been remiss in my duties and responsibilities. I believe that my batch mates know what I can bring to the table as a member of the ISSBA and will want me demonstrate my skills even more, next year.

Grade 11

Why are you applying for council?

I’m applying to run in the Presidential Pool because I believe I have a strong skill set and personality to hold a position in ISSBA. I have been in various councils over the past years, and I feel that I can apply this experience in a positive way by being a member of ISSBA.

Describe your leadership style.

As a leader, I am highly organized, and take the initiative to make sure meetings run efficiently to plan any upcoming events. I work strongly in collaborative and administrative situations, and strive to plan events to the upmost detail, well in advance. I am extremely dedicated, and work to my full capacity in order to solve any issues that may arise, smoothly and swiftly, and to respond to any short term and long term requests.

Why should students vote for you?

I believe that students should vote for me because I have a lot of experience having held leadership positions in 4 different councils over the past 3 years. I’m hard working, organized, and am dedicated to make sure that council works best to support the students and the school.

Grade 11

Why are you applying for council?

For the past three years, I have served as Student Council President and it has been an amazing experience. I enjoy working with my fellow council members and rallying my batch mates. But now I am ready to expand my wings and venture into the bigger realm of ISBBA. Hopefully, as an ISSBA officer, I will have the opportunity to liaise with ISM’s leadership team and the various grade level councils. In addition, if I am to be elected onto ISSBA, I hope to use my prior experience as a member of Class Council to alter the rules/regulations of BOB so that the event is easier and more enjoyable for Class Councils’ to organize.

Describe your leadership style.

My leadership style is democratic as it is important to receive feedback from by peers. I like to lead by example. I don’t like to gripe because pessimism doesn’t resolve any problems. With any situation, it is best to examine all the relevant viewpoints and democratically come to a consensus so that everyone’s wants and needs may be met. I also believe delegating specific roles is very effective in getting work done quickly and efficiently, as long as all members of the team have a good understanding of the final task at hand.

Why should students vote for you?

In making decisions impacting the school or the students of ISM, I seek the consensus of the majority. I may not agree entirely with the final verdict, but if it is the wish or the desire of the majority, I am willing to adapt and work with everyone. I may have my personal opinions but I always value the suggestions from my peers. I will do my best maintain a personable character so that students are not afraid to confide in me or voice their opinions. Therefore, by voting for me, students will be comfortable to voice their opinions and truly feel part of the community.

Grade 11

Why are you applying for council?

I believe that ISSBA will help me reach my goals. ISSBA will be so much more than a position to me; it will be an opportunity for me to learn about the ISM community and school politics; to implement change; and to thrive personally.
One day, I dream of becoming a lawyer and I hope my ISSBA position will train me for this. I believe that ISSBA will train me to face real world situations, and show me what it’s like working with people from different ages. It will teach me what it takes to be in charge, but also how to work cooperatively.
I genuinely care about ISM and I want to show it by doing more for ISM. I want to do something I am truly motivated for and I am ready to give my 100%. I’ve spent the last 2 years of high school preparing for this, now I am ready to take action. I don’t want to leave ISM being another face in the crowd; I want to leave my mark here and do something I can be proud of. I want to look back to my senior year and say, hey, good job Cesar.

Describe your leadership style.

“One for all, and all for one,” this is a quote from Alexander Dumas “The Three Musketeers,” that perfectly describes my leadership style. I am the type of person that thinks about the group before myself and is willing to do what is necessary to help everyone. I believe in an efficient group dynamics, where people are motivated to work. I believe in the paradoxical synergy of focus and distraction, where one can find inspiration in the most unexpected places. Therefore, I like a creative and free-flowing atmosphere where people can think out loud, express themselves freely, and not feel like they will be judged by the council. I don’t believe in being a dominant leader but rather I aspire to inspire, to encourage my peers to work harder. I’d like to think I lead by example, but I can also be lenient and understanding of others priorities. I’d like to think I am someone people can rely on, or talk to, when they need help.

Why should students vote for you?

Students should vote for me because I am ready to put their needs in front of mine. A good leader needs to have good communicating skills to be able to relate to his peers, and I’d like to think I have exactly that. If elected, I’d like there to be a more open communication between ISSBA and the student body, and if I get into ISSBA I’d like the students to feel that they can voice their opinions to us anytime. I thrive in the juxtaposition of humor and work, and I want to make sure ISSBA is as fun as it is productive.
Students should entrust me with ISSBA because I am motivated and excited to be part of it. I have lots of ideas I am willing to share. From my experiences and conversations with different people across high school, I know what my fellow students want ISSBA to accomplish and change. My fellow bearcats should vote for me because I know what they need, and I will make sure their opinions will be heard. Through being in ISSBA I hope to leave a legacy, I hope to leave a significant mark that will affect not only my graduating batch, but all the batches to come.

Grade 11

Why are you applying for council?

I am applying because I think I could contribute. I believe that I would be able to effectively build upon what has been done before, while bringing in new and helpful ideas. Too many people are too willing to just ignore everything that has been done before, and come willing to tear down years of work to start from scratch. Now, this is not to say that I would not do anything new, but I am willing to learn from the past, and adapt it to more current needs, rather than just treat it is a relic to be discarded. I wish to end this cycle and strive towards a future where we remember all, recycle what is good, revitalize what isn’t as good as it should be, and create what is necessary.

Describe your leadership style.

I firmly believe in leading by example. What this means is that anything I want to have done, I must be willing to do myself. The one who asks for what they themselves are unwilling to do is the one who is unfit to lead. I have respect for authority, but also understand that sometimes it is good to question. If someone with authority over you suggests something you disagree with, one must challenge them, with well reasoned arguments, just as anyone you have authority over should be able to question you. However, one also must be willing to respect their decisions, and understand the difference between helpful suggestions and undermining their efforts. Thus, I would sum up my leadership style as being one who leads by example, and strives to better everything around me by questioning and by being questioned, and then acting upon that questioning.

Why should students vote for you?

Because I care about things. I care about people, how they are doing, if they have troubles, and if there is anything I can do to help them. I care about problems, identifying them, seeing how they are affecting people, and then how to solve them. I am willing to talk, willing to listen, but most importantly, willing to take away and enact ideas from that discussion.

FRANCIS

Grade 10

Why are you applying for council?

I have great reason to believe that participating in a democratic system is of the utmost importance in today’s modern society. This is due to the fact that a majority of nations, organizations, and other organized gatherings of humanity operate on some form of democracy. It is true that some democracies are different from others and some democracies are more flawed than others. But in essence, the purpose of all these democracies remain the same; the pursuit of equality. It is such for the widespread nature of democracy in our society today, it is imperative for individuals such as you and I to earn practice in participating in such a system as early as possible. Running for a position in the International School Student Body Association (ISSBA) allows not me but all of us an opportunity to engage and learn about the government system that our society today so chooses while also doing good things that benefit my fellow peers.

Describe your leadership style.

As a noble and honorable man once stated, “A good leadership style is one that does not stifle others”. Being put in a leadership capacity, my style of leading would be one not of authoritarian rule, but one that prescribes transparency within the Student Government, one that utilizes the power instilled within the representatives to benefit the student body while exercising responsibility throughout.

Regarding transparency, I want ISSBA to be as open to the student body as possible. This would mean constantly updating the student body on events and happenings within ISSBA. I believe this is important as ISSBA represents the student body, and all students have the right to know what decisions their representatives are making.

As a member of ISSBA and as a link between the students and the administration, being a catalyst for positive change is a role that is very inherent. I am willing to do whatever it takes within my capacity as a member of ISSBA to benefit the students.

Why should students vote for you?

So far in my high school career, I have built a reputation of responsibility, efficiency, excellence, and dedication through my actions. For everything I commit to, I become fully dedicated to the cause, willing to do whatever it takes to achieve the best outcome possible. And ISSBA is no different. You, the students, should vote for me as one of the ISSBA Cabinet members because I will conduct the role you give me with great responsibility and professionalism. As such, I will also be completely devoted to my role in ISSBA as I want to ensure that all our high school years will be a rewarding and incredible experience.

Grade 10

Why are you applying for council?

I’m applying for ISSBA because I’d like to help be a voice for the council itself as well as all students. I am running as I would love to represent the student body through ISSBA. My goal is to deliver an additional voice in order to take action on ideas introduced by our students. For example, new ideas for fundraisers enabling the school, clubs or councils to assist in developing the school itself, service partners or contribute in disaster relief funds. Input from various points of view is necessary as they would most likely only consider participating in them if there is something which appeals to them and their peers. Thus, I am keen on completing this task.

Describe your leadership style.

First of all, I believe my style is to be always honest with my peers. I feel as though that the most efficient way to achieve goals is to be direct and straightforward. Additionally, my style is also a mix of a democratic and the authoritative style. The democratic leader would make the final decisions, however, would ensure there is team member input in decision making process as it is vital. However, this style would not be desirable for emergency decisions which is a flaw, thus, in situation like this, all members could potentially not deliver input to their maximum potential. In addition, to ensure new beneficial future decisions, the authoritative style would be ideal for quick changes in circumstances. A mission would be supported by enthusiasm and a clear direction for team members to create a common goal.

Why should students vote for you?

It is uncommon for a Sophomore to run or be elected for ISSBA. Thus, if I were to be elected, I believe that I would be one of the few Junior links to the ISSBA council. ISSBA could potentially receive a distinct perspective to make it holistic by exposing it to unique views. Lastly, I am an avid Facebook user and it takes me little time to respond. Consequently, if there whenever there is something urgent, students will generally receive a response from me in no time in a calm matter as I’m always happy to help!

JESS

Grade 10

Why are you applying for council?

I am applying for ISSBA because I want to apply the things I have learned and the experiences I’ve had as president of sophomore council on a much larger scale. Seeing the work ISSBA has done for the student body in the past, I believe that this is the perfect opportunity for me to give back to the school that has given me and my family so much and for me to be able to help my peers create a more dynamic and positive environment for everyone.

Describe your leadership style.

As a leader, I never see myself as above anyone in the sense of authority. Instead, I see myself as someone who is willing to take on the responsibility that comes with being a leader, someone who is not only willing to listen but also take the appropriate action, and someone who considers all options before choosing the one that benefits the majority, regardless of personal preference or opinion. I am not afraid to own up to the consequences of my actions, and I am one who makes it a point to learn from previous mistakes. I aim always to lead by example, even when certain circumstances prove to be challenging, and to maintain a positive disposition that uplifts those around me.

Why should students vote for you?

I can surely say that my commitment to ISSBA and the student body will be hard to beat. Students should vote for me because I will do what it takes to excel in what is required of me, to exceed expectations, and to consistently improve on my job regardless of its magnitude or level of technicality. Being in class council has made me realize just how challenging it is to take on the responsibility of leading an entire group of students, but it also made me proud of my job and my grade, and has helped me understand that the adversity that comes with holding a position will always be worth it.

NOAH

Noah Ramos

Grade 10

Why are you applying for council?

I am applying for ISSBA council because I want to take a more active role in the community of ISM and be able to improve the experiences of the students at school. Of these experiences, I especially want to have a hand in making sure events such as Battle of the Bearcats and assemblies happen smoothly. I have ideas to make these events more engaging. One such idea would be to allow students to suggest events for BOB through a survey, making BOB a day where more people can participate in events relevant to them. I also am hardworking and capable of making such suggestions come to life. I am qualified for the position, and am someone who will be motivated and active if I become a council member.

Describe your leadership style.

I am a consensual leader. I like to make sure that the community gets a say in a lot of the decisions that would affect the high school body. This means that if, for example, a change would be made to an event such as Battle of the Bearcats, I would send out a survey to the high school body to make sure that they approve of it. My leadership style will help me ensure that I get the input of the student body, making every decision one that is wanted by the community.

Why should students vote for you?

Students should vote for me mainly for two reasons. The first is that I am hardworking and thus able to get things done. If I make it into the council, I will be able to do what is required of me and more. The second is that I am a strong communicator. I will be able to get feedback from my classmates, making sure that their voices will be heard. If important decisions are to be made, I will do my best to ensure that the high school body will get a say in it.

SAMMY

Sammy Westfall

Grade 10

Why are you applying for council?

I’ve been at ISM for a total of seven years now and have really come to learn a lot about, and love the entire school. This school was, and continues to be, one of the most welcoming and kindest communities that I’ve ever experienced- and being a member of ISSBA will provide me a platform to give back to this community. Our high school is full of really great, smart, charismatic people and being a member of this council will allow me to listen to all of your ideas and, along with the other council members, make decisions based on them to make high school more enjoyable for everybody. I’m not applying for ISSBA so that my all of my ideas will be put into effect- I am applying so that all of yours do. Moreover, I’ve been a part of Sophomore Council, and I think that my experiences this year have helped me grow as a leader- and I can use all of these experiences to help serve you better.

Describe your leadership style.

A good council member must listen to every student’s complaints, suggestions, concerns, questions, and opinions- and make decisions which represent them. I have a participative style of leadership that would encourage anyone who has anything they want to say, to say it- without feeling scared or shy. I try my hardest to ensure that everyone’s opinion is put into account impartially. I also stay committed to the things that I do, and maintain the drive and perseverance it takes in order to accomplish goals, no matter the obstacles.

Why should students vote for you?

If chosen to be a part of ISSBA, I will do everything in my ability to make the next school year as smooth running and enjoyable for everybody, as I can. In order to do so- a high level of commitment and passion is needed and I know that I am completely up for the challenge. I consider myself to be a very positive person, however, I also have the diligence that a council member requires. Having the right mix of these things will allow me to complete the tasks required, while also making the year fun for everybody. I care a lot about the entire high school and my highest priority will be to make sure that the voice of every student is heard and well-represented.
